Circumcision

What is circumcision?

Circumcision is a surgical procedure that involves the removal of the foreskin from the tip of the penis. It’s a practice that has been conducted for centuries for various reasons, be it cultural, religious, or medical. Our Victoria Medi-Place practice provides the following:

  • Thorough consultations with parents.
  • Discussing the benefits and risks.
  • Ensuring you make an informed decision that aligns with your family's beliefs and values.

What are the types of circumcision?

  1. Infant Circumcision: This is typically performed on newborns and is often a quicker procedure than circumcision in older children or adults. It can be done for religious or cultural reasons, as well as medical reasons like preventing urinary tract infections or the risk of certain diseases in adulthood.
  2. Adult Circumcision: This procedure is typically more involved than infant circumcision, often requiring stitches and a longer recovery period. It might be performed for medical reasons like recurrent balanitis or phimosis or for personal, cultural, or religious reasons

Reasons for Circumcision

  • Medical Reasons: Conditions like phimosis (tight foreskin), recurrent balanitis (inflammation of the glans), and prevention of certain sexually transmitted infections.
  • Religious or Cultural Reasons: Certain faiths or cultures consider circumcision a rite of passage or a mark of identity.
  • Personal Preference: Some choose circumcision for cosmetic or personal hygiene reasons.

How is circumcision provided?

The procedure is usually performed under local or general anaesthesia, depending on the age of the patient and the specifics of the case. Once the foreskin is removed, the wound might be closed with stitches that dissolve over time.

Please note we would like to inform our patients that Medi-Crescent Practice is not currently able to perform infant circumcisions. In addition, we are committed to expanding our range of services and improving patient care. As such, we are actively working on gaining the necessary experience and expertise to offer Voluntary Male Medical Circumcision (VMMC) in the near future. We appreciate your patience and understanding as we strive to serve you better.
